How to calculate BMI by hand
The metric version is the definition:
BMI = weight in kilograms ÷ (height in metres)²
So 80 kg at 1.80 m is 80 ÷ 3.24 = 24.7.
The imperial version needs a conversion factor:
BMI = 703 × weight in pounds ÷ (height in inches)²
So 180 lb at 70 inches is 703 × 180 ÷ 4,900 = 25.8. The 703 does nothing except reconcile pounds and inches with the metric definition—convert the same measurements to kilograms and metres and you land on the same number either way.
Two things follow directly from that formula and are worth noticing before you read anything into your result. First, height is squared, which is why BMI is only a rough correction for size and tends to read high on tall people and low on short ones. Second, weight enters as a single lump. The equation has no term for muscle, fat, bone, water, or where any of it sits.

These are the standard adult classifications, and they are exactly what the name says: screening categories. They were built to describe populations, where they do a reasonable job of flagging groups at elevated risk. Applied to one individual they are a starting question, not a finding. They are also not applied unmodified to children and teenagers, to pregnancy, or to some athletic populations—those cases have their own reference charts and belong in a conversation with a clinician rather than a web form.
Is BMI accurate?
It is accurate at what it measures, which is a ratio of weight to height. It is simply not a measure of body fat, and it was never designed to be one.
The clearest way to see the gap is to hold weight constant and vary everything else:

This is why "is BMI accurate for muscular people" is one of the most-searched follow-ups to the calculation. The honest answer is that it is accurate arithmetic producing a misleading label. If you have been resistance training for a couple of years, a BMI of 26 or 27 tells you far less than your waist measurement and your logged lifts do—and reacting to it by cutting weight can mean throwing away the exact tissue you spent two years building.
The reverse error is just as common and gets discussed less. A BMI inside the healthy band says nothing about how much of that weight is muscle, which is why two people can share a "healthy weight" classification with quite different amounts of lean mass and quite different waist measurements.

What to measure instead of arguing with your BMI
There are three signals that do the job BMI cannot, and all three cost seconds a week.
