TDEE stands for total daily energy expenditure: every calorie your body spends in a day, added up. It is the number your intake gets compared against, which makes it the input to almost every other nutrition decision—eat under it and you lose weight, eat over it and you gain. What is TDEE?

Total daily energy expenditure is the sum of four things, and they are wildly different sizes:

Two consequences are worth carrying into any decision you make from this number. First, your workout is rarely the biggest lever: for most people the unplanned movement across the whole day outweighs the hour in the gym. Second, NEAT is the component that moves without permission—it quietly falls when you diet, which is a large part of why weight loss slows on an unchanged calorie target. How to calculate TDEE

The standard method is two multiplications:

  1. Estimate resting energy. The calculator above uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which reads your age, height, weight, and sex to predict the calories you would burn doing nothing at all.
  2. Multiply by an activity level. Sedentary through extra active, roughly 1.2 to 1.9. The result is your estimated TDEE.

Step two is where the accuracy goes. Resting energy is predicted reasonably well by body size; the activity multiplier is a five-option dropdown standing in for the entire variable half of your expenditure, and the gap between "lightly active" and "moderately active" is several hundred calories a day. Pick the level you honestly average across a normal month rather than the one that describes your best week—an inflated multiplier produces a maintenance number that is too high, which then produces a deficit that is not one.

That is the ceiling on what any total daily energy expenditure calculator can do. It is a decent first guess and a bad final answer.

How to find your actual TDEE from your own data

Here is the method almost nobody uses, because it needs something a calculator page does not have: your history.

If you know what you ate and you know what your weight did, your maintenance calories are recoverable by arithmetic. Over a window of two to four weeks:

Actual TDEE ≈ average daily intake + (pounds lost × 3,500 ÷ days)

Lose weight and your true expenditure was higher than you ate; gain weight and it was lower. A worked example: you averaged 2,300 calories a day for 21 days and your weight trend fell 2 lb. That is 7,000 calories of stored energy, or about 333 a day, so your real TDEE sits near 2,633—and if the formula told you 2,900, the formula was wrong about you by a meaningful margin.

Four honesty caveats, because this is an estimate too, just a much better-informed one:

  • The 3,500 kcal-per-pound figure is a rule of thumb, not a measured constant. It holds up well enough over a few weeks and drifts over longer stretches.
  • Use a trend, not two weigh-ins. Comparing the first morning to the last morning mostly measures water. A moving average across the window is the honest input.

  • It is only as good as your logging. Systematically under-recording intake shifts the answer down. You do not need perfection, but you do need consistency—the same rough level of care every day.

Why your TDEE keeps moving

A maintenance number is a snapshot, not a constant. It falls as you get lighter, because a smaller body costs less to run and to move. It falls further through reduced NEAT when you are in a sustained deficit. It rises with added muscle, added training, and a more active job. None of that is a metabolism "breaking"—it is the number doing what it always does.

The practical implication: a TDEE you calculated in January is wrong by March, and the correction is not a new formula but a fresh look at the same two series. Precision on the input side matters more than most people expect here, because the whole calculation rests on your intake average. Packaged foods can be logged exactly by photographing the barcode; a named food gets a database lookup rather than a guess; a restaurant plate is a labelled estimate, and that is fine as long as it is labelled as one. What to do with the number

TDEE is the input, not the plan. Where it goes next depends on the goal:
